MOTHERLAND CALLS: THE OTHER SIDE

An add-on for Motherland Calls consisting of 10 separate single-player missions on the Eastern Front playable from the German perspective.

Image

It is based on the "Other Side" conception, which means that besides new missions, you also will be able to play some battles from Motherland Calls campaign as a German commander - therefore from the other side.

The addon is made as a set of 10 separate missions, which will give you a full freedom of which missions you want to play and in which sequence you wish.

Missions included:

Tank battle in Dubno-Brody area (June 1941)

Attack on Yelnya (July 1941)

Defending the Yelnya salient (August 1941)

Inside the Demyansk pocket (April 1942)

Advance to Ordzhonikidze (November 1942)

Withstanding the Operation Mars (December 1942)

Kursk battle near Ponyri (July 1943)

Holding the Narva bridgehead (March 1944)

Counter-attack near Riga (August 1944)

Battle on Seelow heights (April 1945)

NOTE: Is about to be completed soon.

A brilliant idea.

Another great idea, but why not join those missions in a chapter and add core units to the core units enthusisats?

Because I wanted to make something different, so I decided to create it as a set of independent missions, so everyone will be able to choose which missions he wants to play and in which sequence. But I named them in such way, that they will be listed together and along the date.

Moreover, if you look at the missions, they are from all over the time and places of the war on the eastern front, so to make them as a chapter would be a bit weird. Chapter should be a compact set of joined battles and this is not like that, but more as a set of some selected (and in some cases also a bit forgotten) battles from all over the war.

And talking about core units, I probably would not add them even if it would have been made as a chapter, because I think that this concept of core units is a nonsense (both in historical and game view). They don't have any historical basis, so what they are? They are just and only a Nival's attempt to import RPG features into a RTS game (mainly because of random missions, where they were mostly the only units you had, they were not designed for normal missions). This only leads to situations, when players take care of their core units in such way as being heroes (in RPG-game meaning, so smth like "hero-characters") and don't want to loose them whatever happens and they are not much willing to use them in risky situations which narrows their tactical options in the battle. And if you think about it, no regular field commander was able to pick the equipment he specifically chose. Everyone had to fight with what he had been given for the battle. War is simply not a "candy-store" and that's why I don't like and don't support the conception of core units any more.

Very good idea. Your point on the core units is very interesting. In fact what happens with CU is what you describe. If we have to approximate the wartime doctrine, we should commit all available forces to achieve a breakthrough. But most likely the "precious" core units would be kept behind other less important units, which normally might be less powerful (ie we would throw pkfwII against enemy defenses sparing the core pkfwIV !) which is against logic.

On the one hand, I agree with Gordon- you do tend to preserve your core units until you've reached a hopeless situation in the battle and are forced to use them, by which time it is too late.

On the other hand, however, core units- first of all- make the campaign more fun, and also give you a good idea of the progression of equipment throughout the war years (provided that it is accurate, of course).
And if you assume that you've served in the same unit throughout the entire war (which is the general, natural tendency of players- unless they're nomads or smth), then you get REALLY annoyed when some of the men you've fought with throughout the campaign keep missing their targets in critical moments in battle  , which makes you reload again.

Personally, I prefer chapters/campaigns with core units, or just single missions.

Nice screenshots there. Although I'm not fond of towns turned into tiny villages, I support the idea in general.

Sad to say this, but the project is cancelled as it has no perspective now.

Goodbye, mates. It was a pleasure to be with you here. :)

GordonCZ please don't give up your mod add-on yet, your mod is too good to do that.
The portal hasn't died, it's just transforming to one without Lee.
There are still plenty of people that are willing to play it and I'm sure we'll manage to make a new portal.
So please reconsider your announcement.

A great fan of your wonderfull mod.

Sorry to hear that Gordon

Achtung Panzer was the best mod I have ever played, I learnt lots from that compared to vanilla BK (all I have) It was, in fact, far far better than the original game!!!!

I'm just starting out on MC and it's fantastic (if even harder!). I too was dissapointed by the lack of core units (initially) but I now fully agree with you. It adds even more realism and makes you tackle a map exactly as intended by the auther.

Very sorry to hear the add-on cancelled. Sorry in general that this site is going down the plug hole. I do hope (if) a new site is created it will be easy to find as I have little time to follow all the threads and in-fighting elsewhere here.

If not, then simply thanks for some great campaigns!!!!
