Anyone know how to get through the Smolensk mission, blocking in the centre of the map with only around 5 mins to do this seems crazy. Tried many times without success. No time to do anything except rush most of my units forward to instant destruction. Really frustrating. Breifing not much help, does not indicate how to achieve this. It does say russians are already retreating but all I see is stationery units. bombing or artillery bombardment does not help. If I dont get destroyed by enemy units I got wasted by russian artillery. Trying to go round Smolensk as indicated.
This mission is diabolically hard, virtually impossible - it really spoils a good chapter, and this is one of the earlier missions! I hate these time limit things.

Anyone got any ideas?

I think what I did was was gather together all my troops and armour from the larger southern group, (disbanding the infantry squads and retaining the officers, and asking the troops to stay standing up during the assault for added speed), attacking towards the little villiage south of Smolensk, and before occupying that villiage redirecting all the forces to  cut off the main road out of Smolensk (down which the withdrawers travel) near where the road exits the map while praying that the Soviets didn't launch their breakout before I got at least a few tanks there. If I remember correctly what killed me several times was not the infantry but 1 or 2 armoured cars racing ahead of the withdrawing infantry to exit the map which caused me to lose.

It did take numerous attempts to get that part right, but staying away from gunbattles in the outskirts of Smolensk seemed to help. I can't remember how I did it the first time round, but it was probably very similar. In the recent victory I was slightly helped by having 4 Maus supertanks as my core units.

Anyway, if still totally stuck, cheat. It's only a game...

Thanks ZXB. Assume Maus Tanks a cheat. Never cheated before. Would not get any satisfaction from cheating. I just tried again with the northern group and succeeded. I headed along the edge of the map with a couple of bombing runs from medium bombers around the crossroads. Then swung south, eliminated infantry along the way, reached the small lakes and killed russians retreating there and took out those that were near the road, and it worked though I lost 50% of my attacking force. This after something like 12 attempts, I am elated. A bit lucky though to avoid more damage from their artillery. Saved it pretty quickly of course.

Cheers All

as far as I remember I also concentrated my forces near the lake and thus succeeded.

As I can see, you successfully achieved that. :D  I think, it's pretty clearly said that the first objective is to cut off the withdrawal path of the Russians only. Not to conquer the city. I thought it was clear...

More of a minor hack than a cheat. but it's somewhat compensated by increasing the size of all infantry squads to half platoon size, and making grenades more potent. And Maus tanks don't have machine guns...

Congrats on your splendid victory.

To GordonCZ

I did not go into Smolensk. The briefing could be more specific, i.e how to achieve this by using northern or southern group, but whichever you have to run the gauntlet of artillery fire - i was just lucky to get through with around 50% damage and enough strenth left to stop the retreat.  The southern group have to face too may infantry groups on the way. One of the hardest missions I have played, with the time limit impopsed. You expect these towards the end of the campaign!! Never mind - I feel quite chuffed right now that I can continue Panzer - after 6 months!

Anyway thanks to all contributors.

The last mission (Berlin) was played (I decided to fight until the last man) and it was a big pleasure for me to play this fantastic campaign. Thank you very much GordonCZ for many hours of fun ...!

I played the campaign in RT and BH and it run perfectily. But after installed you can't run another chapter, campaign or mission. So if you want to play another chapter you must uninstall it.
Good luck! 8)

Great mod so far!  I started few months ago but I had to stop playing, because of my busy life. I finally got back into playing and I'm in Minsk and I've failed my mission there.

I was supposed to hold off against final wave of attack and I didn't see anyone come through the line. Here is what I have completed so far, I captured two crossroads and one junction. I didn't attack the airfield. I used combined attack of air, artillery, tank, and infantry to attack these positions and held the line against two waves of infantry attacks. When the message announced that there would be final attack and infantry arrived. I managed to kill most of them, however I didn't see anyone go through my defense line. Later, the message popped and said I failed.

Did I miss something? Perhaps I should take a screenshot, would that help?

I did the campaign recently, but can't remember that particular map. Post a screenshot, it should jog my memory a little, I might be able to help (although probably not  :( )

could be helpful. I don't remember this mission now that I paused since months somewhere in the Ardennes. Unfortunately GordonCZ wasn't seen here for a while.

I'll post the screenshot sometime tonight after work.  But if it helps, you can go to first page of this thread and look for 2nd screenshot.

http://bkpforums.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=35860#35860

It'st the same mission I'm in now. I think that screenshot was taken during one of two or three waves of attack.  Perhaps I should reload a save and stretch my defensive line before these waves. It may be helpful if I knew where this final wave would take place.

No problem, I reloaded a save and decided to stretch my defense along the road and use series of trenches, mgs, mortars, and AT guns.  Haven't finished the mission yet but that strategy should work.

Hi,

In this mission you need to have a solid line, cause if one single officer pass, between the woods for example, you will lost. BTW, be aware with all russian waves, maybe one unit have passed in a wave before the last one.
good luck

Hi, Gordon and the others.
I really must say that Achtung Panzer is GODLIKE. I'm playing it since a few days and now I'm in the second mission of the Africa-chapter. The best of it is that it has so many missions and partly you really play a Blitzkrieg because you have to attack very fast with your tanks.
I cannot express how thankfull I'am for this campaign. Go on like that =D>  Thumps Up .

I'm working on a project called "Achtung Panzer!". It is nothing special - a German custom campaign containing 31 single-player missions divided into 10 chapters.

Nothing special?

Congratulations are in order: AP has had more downloads than any other map / chapter. Not bad considering it is less than a year old!

Could someone please clarify this for me?
If I install Achtung Panzer all other chapters are disabled? Does this effect USSR and Allies as well?
I have my installations just right and don't want the hassle of staring from scratch if I mess it up so if someone could help I would be very appreciative, peace j

With the Achtung Panzer! campaign installed to your main data folder the only campaign you will lose access to is the original German one. The Soviet and Allied campaigns remain accessible as do all custom chapters.
GordonCZ thoughtfully named all the AP files in a logical way so it is easy to identify and move out the AP campaign files when you are done with it.

As always thanx BKP.
The instructions said to instal into the root BK folder, not run and not Data.
If I am getting this right I install it into Data like any other campaign or chapter? Will it work in an installation with RTV and Olmsteads in it? or should I put it somewhere fairly clean?
peace j

The installer appends the "Run\Data" paths itself (which actually might trip up installation on non-CDV versions of the game which don't use the Run folder).
If you have Blitzkrieg installed in the default location then just point the AP installer to C:\Program Files\Nival Interactive\Blitzkrieg and it will do the rest.

Best to move Olmsted's mod out of the way just to be on the safe side. It *should* be OK to play with RTV 1.3b alongside it, though no guarantees there won't be hiccups :)
